| There is a big difference between having
a spiritual life and living a spiritual life. “Having” anything requires
work! Having a home requires payments, maintenance, and worry along
with the many pleasures. Having a spiritual life, like having a work
life, a love life, a parenting life, requires upkeep - the continual nourishment
of that particular aspect of your life through learning and striving.
When you make the transition in consciousness from having a spiritual life
to knowing that Life is entirely spiritual, that it is all God, the striving
stops and the Living begins. Then we are like the humble turtle, who doesn’t
have a home, he IS the home. In Unity, we say “there’s only One Presence
and One Power”. That is the most comforting thought in the world,
for no matter what is happening in our minds or exterior lives, God is
present not only in the situation but as the situation.
During Sunday services at Unity Spiritual Center, our theme is often
spoken: Life is Good, All the Time! The puzzled looks of newcomers
promptly appear upon hearing that odd statement.
You can almost hear them thinking - “well life is certainly not good right
now - I’ve got debt, disease, and discomfort in many areas – there’s no
way that life is good all the time”. The relaxed smiles and knowing looks
on the faces of the oldtimers who have lived with this concept reveal a
different story. They know that no matter what is happening at any
given moment God is present and divine order is working itself out.
They know that through events that seem so dismal at the time, spiritual
maturity is gained, faith is gained, knowledge and experience are gained,
and a deeper, sweeter relationship with God is gained. God IS Life,
God is expressed AS us, not just in us. There really is Only One
Presence and One Power. We don’t have to “work” on our spiritual
lives any more. Hurrah!
We can relax and enjoy every single moment of every single day, delighting
in it all, regardless of appearances, for our Lives ARE Spiritual! |
